Students from our Level 2 Sports course here at Abingdon and Witney college, offer exercise sessions to members of the public who have been referred to us by their doctor or physiotherapist. The sessions run every week with a specific exercise routine tailored to each client.
One of our students, James Royle tells us how the scheme really benefits him and his client.
"It was satisfying knowing that you've helped out somebody who has been
through a rough time and you cant describe the feeling of satisfaction after
that hour knowing you’ve not only helped them get fitter, but also given them
an hour out of what would be their normal daily routine.
Since my client had lost a stone in 4 weeks due to the shingles and diabetes he wanted to get bigger and start building some muscle back. I started off by doing some simple leg extension with light dumbbells. After that, I did a different type of leg extensions but this time with resistance bands. I then took him for a treadmill session. 6 sets of 60 seconds walking at a continuous pace. This was to help his cardio and help build up muscles in his legs. After that I took him for a session on the exercise bike where I did the same sets and time as before. After that I took him for a light upper body session using the chest press machine and light dumbbells for bicep curls. This was to build up muscle in his upper body.
I've learnt how to adapt my sessions to different peoples needs. Since being on the course I have trained all different types of people. From seven year olds to fit, healthy people my age, to elderly people. Each of them have different needs and participate for different needs. By gaining experience in teaching a variety of different people I have learnt how to create challenging, but able sessions for people of all abilities.
Since I want to go into the personal training/strength and conditioning industry when I'm older, by knowing how to adapt my sessions to different peoples needs is a significant part of it."
